Having worked with a group of very talented 3D types, I decided I wanted to know more and get behind the 3D math and 3D story telling skills so enrolled on a short three day course held at BBC Television Centre.

The 3D "boot camp" was aimed at directors, cinematographers, producers and camera operators for both movies and television. The course consisted of three days of intensive in-class and hands-on training in 3D production. The attention to detail for the subject matter was excellent and special thanks must go to Buzz Hays and Scott Steele (from Sony and 3Ality respectively) who taught the fundamentals of making good 3D, what to avoid and facilitated the chance to get down and dirty on multiple live 3D shoots.

The goal was to present historical knowledge of stereoscopy applied to state of the art technologies and known techniques.  Coverage was impressive with lessons covering 3D terminology, 3D versus 2D techniques, types of 3D production and how 3D affects storytelling.    We also covered the fundamental understanding of mathematics and concepts behind the technical and creative decisions.

The practical exercises included experimentation with blocking, composition, camera movement and lighting for 3D all of which really helped bring alive the possibilities of 3D for features, broadcast and live events.

Thanks also to BBC Studios and Post Production for hosting, watering and feeding us as well as providing studio space and screening facilities.

So, if you have a project you wish to discuss, want me to put you in touch with the exceptionally capable guys from the Mercedes shoot, or want to know more about my experience in shooting 3D call me or drop me an email

Shooting 3D Steadicam in London and Manchester and 3D on 3Ality and Pace Rigs In London.  With training and experience as a stereographer and convergence puller on rigs such as the Element Technica 3D Rig, Paradise FX and on the P+S Technik Freestyle.  Makes a change from shooting IMAX, 35mm and 16mm Film on Steadicam or MK-V AR Revolution.  Looking forward to getting a Stereo Alexa rig up and flying although looking at recent posts from BTS on Hugo Cabret, I'll need to use my SteadiSeg Handsfree-Transport Segway.

Enjoyed my recent 3D shoot so thought I’d sharpen my skills and learn more.  Have a project you want to discuss? Call me!
